Seeing a familiar place differently

Developing Thailand’s tourism campaign for Singaporeans

Seeing beyond what people already knew

Thailand has long been one of Singapore’s favourite holiday destinations. Its proximity, familiarity and accessibility have made it a natural choice for weekend getaways and annual holidays alike.

Yet familiarity can quietly change the way people experience a place. As travel options across the region expanded and Singaporeans became increasingly well-travelled, Thailand no longer benefited simply from being well known. The question was no longer how to introduce the destination, but how to make people feel curious about it again.

Rediscovering the traveller

Because Singaporeans already knew Thailand well, another campaign centred on destinations, attractions and local experiences was unlikely to change perceptions.

Our conversations kept returning to something more familiar. Holidays often give people permission to behave differently. Everyday routines give way to spontaneity. Shopping becomes more indulgent, meals become occasions to savour, and entertainment becomes something to embrace without hesitation.

Reveal Your Thaidentity grew from that observation. Rather than inviting Singaporeans to discover Thailand, the campaign invited them to recognise a different side of themselves within it. Shopping, food and entertainment became exaggerated, character-driven expressions of the playful behaviours many travellers recognise in themselves when they are away from home.

By shifting the focus from the destination alone to the experience of the traveller, the campaign encouraged people to see a familiar holiday through a different lens.

Familiar places can still surprise us

Working on this campaign reminded us that people do not always travel in search of somewhere new. Sometimes they return because a place allows them to become a different version of themselves, if only for a few days.

When that feeling is recognised honestly, familiarity becomes less of an obstacle than an opportunity. A destination does not always need to change to feel different. Sometimes it is enough to help people see themselves within it in a new way.
